Recognizing Eye Donation Month

By Derek Simon

Celebrate Eye Donation Month

November marks the recognition of Eye Donation Month, a time that highlights the significant impact one can make by deciding to become a registered donor.  This noble act is a testament to the transformative power of generosity, where lives are positively impacted through the selfless choices of individuals.

Eye tissue donation involves the altruistic decision of individuals to contribute to the cause of sight restoration following their passing.  Our dedicated team of trained technicians at the Rocky Mountain Lions Eye Bank, serving as the local eye bank for Colorado and Wyoming, plays a pivotal role in recovering donated eye tissue from deceased individuals.

Primarily, the cornea is the focal point of this recovery process.  As the transparent part of the eye, the cornea holds significant sway over visual acuity, commanding 65-75% of the eye’s ability to focus light.  It is the very surface over which contact lenses rest for those who utilize them.  The need for eye donors and cornea transplants stems from the prevalence of corneal blindness, which accounts for approximately 12% of blindness cases in the United States.  This form of blindness may arise from diseases or injuries causing scarring to the cornea.

Register Your Donation Decision and Talk To Your Family

Anyone can register to become a cornea donor.  Even those who are blind can donate their corneas so that another’s sight can be restored.  Given that only 12% of blindness in the U.S. is attributed to corneal issues, individuals with various vision challenges can still make a significant difference in the lives of others.

For those yet to embark on the journey of eye donation, the process is remarkably accessible. Consider expressing your commitment to giving the gift of sight by registering as a donor when obtaining or renewing your driver's license or state-issued ID card. Alternatively, online registration is available through platforms such as Donate Life Colorado or Donate Life Wyoming. Equally crucial is engaging in open conversations with your family about the importance of donation, ensuring that your wishes are known and respected.

As we near the end of Eye Donation Month, let's collectively embrace the opportunity to be beacons of hope, contributing to a world where the gift of sight transcends boundaries and transforms lives. Through simple yet heartfelt choices, we have the power to illuminate the future of others.
