Job Description:
COMPENSATION: Starting salary $42,000 per year

EDUCATION: Although not required, a bachelor’s, associate's degree, or certification in science or a medical-related field is recommended. High School diploma or equivalent required.

EXPERIENCE:  While no specific experience is required, previous medical experience is viewed favorably.  This position is learned through extensive on-the-job training. This is not a traditional clinical lab tech position.

SUMMARY STATEMENTThe Laboratory Technician is primarily responsible for tissue processing and processing facility support activities.  The RMLEB Standard Operating Procedures will be adhered to, and Technicians must routinely revisit RMLEB training programs to include reading updated policies/procedures as well as demonstrating proficiency.  Technicians must have adequate physical and mental stamina working 10-hour shifts walking quickly in the lab area to keep up with and support tissue processing activities. The Technician must be very detail-oriented, dependable, and professional in appearance and behavior.  A current Driver’s license, access to a personal vehicle, and vehicle insurance are required.

ASSIGNED RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  • Perform data entry and compile and organize donor records
  • Utilizing the principles of aseptic/sterile technique, support laboratory ocular tissue processing procedures
  • Perform specular microscopy and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
  • Pick up inbound tissue from the airport and perform other courier or delivery functions
  • Transport tissue to surgery centers
  • Provide and receive reports and assignments to/from co-workers, Recovery & Eligibility Supervisor and Processing & Distribution Supervisor, and the Technical Manager
  • Utilize the principles of the aseptic technique to perform circulating duties as needed for laboratory tissue processing procedures.
  • Possibly perform some limited laboratory tissue procedures
  • Decontaminate and process reusable surgical instruments for steam sterilization – operate and if needed perform routine maintenance and documentation as outlined in SOP for tabletop steam autoclave and supporting processing equipment.
  • Unpack, inspect, and label new supplies (Optisol, gowns, gloves, Styrofoam coolers, etc.) as well as other supply inventory activities.
  • Processing record documentation, tracking of kits, and processing supplies
  • Perform inventory functions (keep lab areas organized and stocked)
  • Facility and clean room monitoring, cleaning activities
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Processing and Distribution Supervisor

MISCELLANEOUS POSITION REQUIREMENTS:  This job requires driving to perform position duties.  As such, a valid driver’s license, current insurance, and access to a personal vehicle are required.  On-call time or sick call coverage may be required.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS:

Distant Vision:                     Same as state requirements for operating an automobile.                      

Near Vision                          Jaeger-2 (near card) with or without correction at 16 inches.
Stereo Vision                       “Pass” with the Stereo Fly test as minimum screening criteria.
PD                                         The Inter-pupillary distance (PD) is the distance between pupils. No less than 50 mm and no more than 78 mm as measured with a PD stick using standard opticianary technique.
Color Vision                         “Pass” using the Pseudo Isochromatic Plate test (PIP) or Ishihara Plates. 
Dexterity                               All necessary digits on both hands in order to use surgical instruments.  Appropriate dexterity to operate business machines with or without aids or prostheses.
Ambulation                           Ability to ambulate at a brisk pace on their own.
Hearing                                  Normal conversational hearing in order to interact with hospital staff and families.  Understanding speech:  250 hz to 8000 hz in the worse ear with or without aid.
Intact Dermis                        Needs to perform a surgical scrub of the hands and arms prior to performing sterile technical work processing or other tissue handling.
